In September 2023, tech giant Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) announced that it would invest $4 billion in Anthropic, the two-year-old startup behind AI chatbot Claude.

That big deal — and big-name investor — might have you wondering about how to invest in Anthropic. But if you want to know how to buy Anthropic stock, there’s bad news — you can’t. Anthropic is not publicly traded, so there’s no Anthropic stock symbol to trade.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t invest in the company’s technology in less direct ways. Keep reading for a comprehensive review of how to buy Anthropic stock in 2025.

Anthropic: The Basics

Before we jump into how to buy Anthropic stock, let’s talk about why you might be interested in investing in the first place.

As noted earlier, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) recently announced that it would invest $4 billion in Anthropic. The transaction will take place in two phases.

This alone makes Anthropic worth watching. But wait, there are more big-name investors!

In late 2022, Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) invested $300 million in the company, for a 10% stake…

Plus, other notable investors include Spark Capital, Salesforce (NYSE: CRM), Sound Ventures, Menlo Ventures, and Zoom (NASDAQ: ZM).

What makes Anthropic such a magnet for big money?

Two key things:

  • It was founded by former ChatGPT employees.
  • It has a promising AI chatbot named Claude.

Curious about Claude? The two released models of Claude have seen some success — in particular, they have an edge on the competition in terms of token count (basically, their model can take in much larger inputs, and produce much larger outputs).

Image2

But is it a ChatGPT stopper? Maybe, maybe not.

Claude 2, the most advanced model from Anthropic, is currently in open beta — however, it is hampered by the fact that accessibility is limited to the U.K. and the U.S.

This seems to have kneecapped potential user growth. Even though Claude’s larger context window allows it to give longer, more fleshed-out responses and analyze thousands of lines of code at once, these advantages over the competition haven’t translated into users.

Claude even boasts a more recent knowledge base, with a cutoff date in early 2023 — compared to ChatGPT’s cutoff date of September 2023.

Additionally, the most recent data suggests that Claude has somewhere around 1.7 million unique visits per month — compared to ChatGPT’s roughly 100 million daily users and 1.6 billion visits per month.

In terms of total funding, Anthropic could climb up to $5.3 billion if everything pans out — compared to OpenAI’s $14 billion in funding from Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT).

To some, this indicates that Anthropic (and its investors) are playing catch-up in the AI game. But to others, it represents an opportunity. Let’s discuss further…

Amazon’s Big Investment

Image1

Amazon’s $4 billion investment will take place in two phases — a $1.25 billion investment now for a minority stake, with an option for a second, $2.75 billion phase if undisclosed conditions are met.

An ecosystem is in the making, Amazon will use Anthropic’s tech across its businesses, AWS will be Anthropic’s primary cloud provider, and Amazon will also provide the custom chips necessary.

Amazon’s investment in Anthropic will make it more competitive in the AI sphere. But this may not translate to AI dominance.

Bears will say that it’s a meager move for Amazon, that they’re simply trying to make the best of a less-than-ideal situation. The best time to invest in AI would have been four or five years ago — the second best time is right now. But it might not be enough to catch up.

Bulls will argue the contrary. In fact, Justin Post, a top-rated analyst for Bank of America, reiterated his Strong Buy rating on Amazon directly after the partnership was announced.

It is “an interesting partnership,” the analyst characterized, because Anthropic goes up against evolving AI models from “tech titans” Microsoft, Google, and Meta.

Anthropic appears to have chosen Amazon as its “primary” cloud partner because Google has already invested in and developed its own large language models, Post said.

Notably, Anthropic’s agreement with Google will continue and the company still plans to make its technology available via Google Cloud and elsewhere, Post said, citing a Reuters article.

A $4B investment suggests Amazon’s management believes Anthropic has the potential to become “one of the AI leaders,” the analyst posited.

The deal “could be a branding event for AWS,” Post concluded.

Can You Buy Anthropic Stock? Is Anthropic Publicly Traded?

I know. You’re here because you want to know how to buy Anthropic stock. The short answer is that you can’t —  the company isn’t publicly traded.

The company might go public at some point, but the company has not given any indication that an IPO is on the horizon. But as I said earlier, you do still have options. Let’s talk about them.

How to Buy Anthropic as an Accredited Investor

While it may not be publicly traded, accredited investors can still buy Anthropic stock.

How to Buy Anthropic as a Retail Investor

Anthropic stock isn’t publicly traded. So if you’re a retail investor, you can’t invest in Anthropic.

Don’t click off just yet. Let’s talk about some of the other opportunities available to you. But to understand them, we need to discuss a few basics:

Who Owns Anthropic?

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by the company’s current CEO Dario Amodei and his sister Daniela. Both are former employees of OpenAI.

The company is currently supported by a number of investors including:

And, of course, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) recently announced that it would invest.

Does Google Own Anthropic?

Nope. Although Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) has invested a sizable chunk in the company, it doesn’t own it outright. Nor does Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN).

How to Invest in Anthropic Stock as a Retail Investor

Note: This article does not provide investment advice. The stocks listed should not be taken as recommendations. Your investments are solely your decisions.

Anthropic stock cannot be directly purchased by retail investors — but there are a few ways to capture some of the company’s growth, or recreate it. Here are two to consider.

Invest in Anthropic Investors

Investing in Anthropic’s notable investors like Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is an obvious way to invest in the company’s growth. The problem with this approach, of course, is that you’re not just investing in Anthropic — you’re investing in everything else that Amazon does. But given the good ratings and the stock’s trajectory, that might not be such a bad thing:

As I’ve noted a few times, there are other big-name investors that also just so happen to be public companies, like Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Salesforce (NYSE: CRM), and Zoom (NASDAQ: ZM). Investing in these companies could give you an indirect piece of the action with Anthropic.

Invest in Anthropic Competitors

Another option is to invest in companies that are competitors to Anthropic. Perhaps the most obvious? Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), which is a massive stakeholder in ChatGPT.

While MSFT doesn’t own ChatGPT or its parent company OpenAI, it’s got a huge stake. In early 2023, the company announced a big, multiyear investment with OpenAI. The amount is said to be in the $10 billion range. This is on top of multiple previous investments that started with a $1 billion investment in 2019.

How to Buy the Anthropic IPO

Anthropic doesn’t currently have plans to go public. But when it does, be prepared!

  1. Create or login to your brokerage account (if you don’t have one, we recommend eToro – it’s free)

Anthropic Stock Price Chart

Because shares of Anthropic aren’t traded, there isn’t an Anthropic stock price, and there’s no stock price chart.

However, there are still metrics that can give you an idea of how the company’s doing. First up is a chart (source) detailing Anthropic’s annualized revenue vs. OpenAI. As you can see, Anthropic is trailing. However, ChatGPT is further along in the game — this could mean there’s potential for Anthropic to catch up, particularly with big money from investors rolling in.

Second, and yes, as a writer I recognize the dark humor in posting this, a chart (source) detailing the cost per 1000 written words between a paid freelance writer, ChatGPT, and Claude’s most recent model.

As you can see, the margins look a bit better with Claude, which could be a major selling point for Anthropic.

The bottom line? If you’re interested in investing directly in Anthropic and you’re an accredited investor, check out Equitybee — it might just surface as an option for pre-IPO investing. Otherwise, consider researching some of the related sectors and stocks mentioned in this article.
