Let me offer up a hypothetical example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Say you want to invest in shares of <strong>Microsoft (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/stocks\/us\/nasdaq\/msft\" target=\"_blank\">NASDAQ: MSFT<\/a>)<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t just log on to Amazon and buy Microsoft shares with your Prime account.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, you have to buy through a broker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every broker works a little differently, so it\u2019s crucial to do some research first to find a broker that suits your needs, including account minimums, assets offered, and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the purposes of this example, let\u2019s say you\u2019ve chosen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/go\/robinhood\" target=\"_blank\">Robinhood<\/a> as your brokerage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve followed the steps to create an account, just go to the broker\u2019s website and type in the company name (or ticker):<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/go\/robinhood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/robinhoodmsft.png\" alt=\"Robinhood msft\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>After you find the stock you want, decide how much you want to buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some brokers require that you list the amount in shares \u2014 Robinhood actually lets you purchase stock in dollar amounts, which may or may not equal an even amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, if you entered $500, it might come out to something like 1.714677 shares.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/go\/robinhood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/robinhoodmsft2.png\" alt=\"Robinhood msft2\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From here, you review your order and then submit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, that\u2019s a very simplified example. You\u2019d want to do a bunch of other stuff, like do your due diligence about buying the stock and researching whether or not now is a good time to buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because ultimately, you\u2019re the decision maker. You\u2019re the one who chooses the stock, whether or not to buy, and how much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But your order is actually submitted on your behalf by your broker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robinhood is part of a class of brokers called discount brokers, which offer low or no-commission trades. But there are other types of brokers you should know about\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.uk3lpwm6a65x\"><strong>Types of Stockbrokers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three main types of stockbrokers: full-service, discount, and direct-access brokers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Full-service brokers<\/strong>&nbsp;provide a range of services, including investment advice, research reports, and personalized portfolio management. They typically charge higher fees and commissions than discount brokers. (Examples: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morganstanley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morgan Stanley<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ml.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merrill Lynch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Goldman Sachs<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Discount brokers<\/strong>&nbsp;offer fewer services than full-service brokers, but charge lower fees and commissions. These brokers allow traders to place orders directly to the exchanges, which can provide faster order execution and better prices. However, they often charge higher fees and require a higher minimum account balance than discount brokers. Before you hand over your hard-earned cash, make sure your chosen brokerage is registered with these two groups:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These organizations make sure that online brokers follow the rules when it comes to handling your trades and keeping your personal information safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And speaking of rules, online brokers also have to be crystal clear about what they&#8217;re offering you in terms of services, fees, and investment options. However, it\u2019s not always evident on their home page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might take a little digging, but you should be able to find information about a broker&#8217;s fees and services on their website, in their account agreements, or through their customer service representatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what broker you choose, make sure to read the fine print and do your due diligence before signing up.
