Here are the evaluation criteria I used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, no-commission trading and low account minimums are the standard, and all of the legacy brokers have excellent customer support, educational resources, and investment research. Those factors won\u2019t help you pick one over another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the real differentiators:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><ul><li>Target clientele\n<li>Trading platform\n<li>Investment products\n<li>User experience<\/ul><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>With that criteria in mind, read on for my breakdown of each broker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h.oh6k8rt141rv\"><strong>How does Fidelity compare to the rest?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fidelity is the best overall broker on this list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of your investing style, whether you\u2019re a completely passive investor or an extremely active trader, Fidelity will work for you. Since most investors do some of everything, this versatility is important in a broker. That makes Fidelity the best choice for most.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\">\n<figure class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/fidelity-portfolio.png\" alt=\"Fidelity portfolio\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the 1960s, Fidelity became the first investment firm to market its mutual funds to middle-class investors. Today, it maintains this aim as the go-to option for everyday people, regardless of your exact investing style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fidelity has developed their offerings into a balanced array suitable for every type of investor and trader. It\u2019s great for passively investing in mutual funds and ETFs, active management and individual stock picking, and (more recently) day and swing trading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why it has 80 million users and $3.6 trillion in assets under management, which is one of the leading tallies among all brokerage firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like TD Ameritrade and Schwab, Fidelity has two levels of trading platforms. Its suite of investment apps rates among the easiest to use, while its Active Trader Pro trading platform has all of the charting options offered by TD Ameritrade and Schwab. The others on this list only offer cryptocurrency exposure through ETFs. I still prefer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/go\/etoro-sign-up?SubAffiliateID=fidelity-ameritrade-schwab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eToro<\/a>&#8216;s ease of use for crypto trading, though. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fidelity robo advisor services are free for accounts below $25,000 and cost 0.35% per year for accounts $25,000 and above.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fidelity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Get started on Fidelity<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h.ck7c49qgexm1\"><strong>Is TD Ameritrade better than the rest?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If I didn\u2019t use Fidelity, I would use TD Ameritrade. And since TD Ameritrade is now part of Schwab, I guess that means I&#8217;d use Schwab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its well-rounded offering, Fidelity has a slight slant toward passive and buy-and-hold investors. TD Ameritrade, on the other hand, always geared itself toward traders.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\">\n<figure class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/td-ameritrade-portfolio.png\" alt=\"Td ameritrade portfolio\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>While you can have passive investments and long-term stock investments on the platform, most TD users are spending (at least) some of their time trading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2009, TD Ameritrade acquired\u00a0thinkorswim, which is one of the best trading platform options and one of the most heavily used programs in the industry. Since Schwab took over TD Ameritrade, thinkorswim is now part of Schwab&#8217;s offerings. If you are an active trader, you\u2019ll appreciate the unparalleled toolkit that thinkorswim puts at your disposal. Now, it manages $7.3 trillion for a client base that ranges from long-term investors to short-term traders. They have the services to complement every approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, Schwab is best for long-term, retirement-focused investors (with well-funded portfolios).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\">\n<figure class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Schwab-portfolio-view.png\" alt=\"Schwab portfolio view\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Schwab\u2019s appeal for active investors will get a boost when TD Ameritrade\u2019s thinkorswim trading platform is integrated. The current option, StreetSmart Edge, is a step behind both thinkorswim and Fidelity\u2019s option. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schwab\u2019s robo-advisor wing, Schwab Intelligent Portfolios, charges no fees &#8211; although there is a $5,000 account minimum. The next step up, Schwab Intelligent Portfolios Premium, has a one-time set up fee of $300 and charges $30 per month ongoing. That might not seem like it, but for smaller accounts it\u2019s one of the highest rates out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, Schwab is positioned for those in, near, or approaching retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019d need to invest more than $100,000 to make Schwab\u2019s robo advisor cheaper than Fidelity\u2019s offering, and nearly $200,000 to match Vanguard\u2019s service fees. With that kind of account size, you\u2019ll likely be more interested in one of Schwab\u2019s Managed Account Select professionally managed portfolios, which start at $100,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Schwab gives investors access to more mutual funds than the other brokerages on this list. There are more than 17,000 to choose from, with 4,000 incurring no fee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The broker also gives access to the most international stock markets (30).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schwab\u2019s basic robo advisory is free. The broker charges a one-time set up fee of $300 for their premium services, and $30 per month ongoing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schwab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Get started on Schwab<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h.ehnscn3rvept\"><strong>Is Vanguard better than the rest?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Like I\u2019ve said, Vanguard is a very different brokerage from the others on this list. For long-term, risk-averse investors, Vanguard is a proven choice; for investors and traders who want to actively manage their money, this broker won\u2019t be a good fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a passive investment platform, Vanguard has a borderline cult-like following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vanguard made its name with low-cost funds and they\u2019re still seen as a leader in this space. Their longtime strength has been their Vanguard index funds, which carry some of the lowest expense ratios in the industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the other brokers on this list have mostly caught up. Fidelity, TD Ameritrade, and Schwab all offer comparable low-expense and no-fee funds. They also offer investment vehicles that Vanguard does not, like futures, forex, and more OTC stocks.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Vanguard_vs.png\" alt=\"Vanguard vs\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Vanguard doesn\u2019t have a trading platform, and it isn\u2019t meant for investors who\u2019d need one. Instead, Vanguard targets the same buy-and-hold, cost-conscious investors it\u2019s always focused on. This focus has brought in $6.7 trillion in assets under management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vanguard Digital Advisor automates your investments for only 0.2% per year, the lowest robo-advisor fee on this list. The account minimum of $3,000 is decreased to $5 for some 401(k) retirement accounts. Vanguard\u2019s professionally managed portfolios are available with an account minimum of $50,000, and incur some of the lowest charges on this list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Vanguard\u2019s customer service is unlocked with bigger accounts; for smaller accounts, it may feel limited compared with the competition <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>As of the end of 2022, Vanguard is in beta testing with its bank sweep program. Previously, cash left in brokerage accounts was swept into the firm\u2019s federal money market fund, which produced smaller interest rates than other brokers on this list <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Vanguard\u2019s robo advisor services are free for the first 90 days, then 0.2% per year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/investor.vanguard.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Get started with Vanguard<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h.5cr2m6g6irpf\"><strong>Head-to-Head Comparisons:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve already told you that my preferred broker is Fidelity, but the decision was easier when I made it. Now that Schwab has acquired TD Ameritrade, the comparison between brokers has gotten tighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll compare them head-to-head here so you can come to your own conclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h.f1g86s8jywnk\"><strong>Fidelity vs TD Ameritrade &#8211; Is Fidelity better than TD Ameritrade?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When I look at Fidelity versus TD Ameritrade, I\u2019m looking ahead to the latter\u2019s Schwab integration. For me the choice is still clear &#8211; I pick Fidelity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of Fidelity\u2019s investment products have lower costs than TD Ameritrade\u2019s (many of which are Schwab offerings). Their trading platforms are both excellent, though thinkorswim gives TD a slight edge (I use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/blog\/tradingview-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TradingView<\/a>&nbsp;anyways). The only thing that gives me pause is Fidelity\u2019s smaller selection of OTC stocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h.hh3r9dr14cdl\"><strong>Charles Schwab vs Fidelity &#8211; Is Charles Schwab better than Fidelity?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No, Charles Schwab is not better than Fidelity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schwab has higher rates on many investment products and services than Fidelity, and has a worse trading platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in, near, or approaching retirement, however, you might appreciate Schwab\u2019s features more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h.48t8i1xwqg6e\"><strong>Charles Schwab vs TD Ameritrade &#8211; Is Charles Schwab better than TD Ameritrade?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s hard to declare a clear winner between Schwab and TD Ameritrade, as they are slowly integrating after a 2020 merger. In 2023, Schwab started offering thinkorswim to its users, eliminating the biggest advantage that TD Ameritrade formerly enjoyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h.tl7cy9rz3xhv\"><strong>Vanguard vs Charles Schwab &#8211; Is Vanguard better than Charles Schwab?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Vanguard vs Charles Schwab is another tough call &#8211; they appeal to different types of investors.
