What is the difference between investing and trading?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s the bottom line:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Investors tend to have longer time horizons, prioritize fundamental analysis, and have a &#8220;buy and hold&#8221; approach. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traders, on the other hand, tend to have shorter time horizons, rely more on technical analysis, and aim to profit from short-term price fluctuations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let me explain all of that in a lot more detail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.ihj6a05jq0c5\"><strong>Investing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest investor vs trader difference is that investors tend to have longer time horizons than traders. They think in terms of years \u2014 not on a daily or minute-by-minute basis like day traders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the investing world, even a holding period of three to five years might be considered \u201cshort-term.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world\u2019s greatest investor, Warren Buffett, often holds stocks for multiple decades:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Buffett has been an investor in Coca-Cola (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/stocks\/us\/nyse\/ko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: KO<\/a>)&nbsp;since 1988 (that\u2019s 35+ years).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 1951, when Buffett was 20, he invested more than half his net worth in GEICO stock. Then in 1996, Berkshire Hathaway (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/stocks\/us\/nyse\/brk.b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: BRK.B<\/a>) (Buffett\u2019s company) acquired all remaining outstanding Geico shares. Berkshire has owned the entire company outright ever since. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Buffett <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4593096-our-favorite-holding-time-is-forever-buffett-most-misinterpreted-quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has stated<\/a>&nbsp;his ideal holding period is \u201cforever\u201d \u2014 and with his initial investment in Geico dating back over 70 years, he clearly puts his money where his mouth is. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreetzen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/buffett.png\" alt=\"Buffett\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Not all investors are as long-term oriented as Buffett. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as a general rule of thumb, many of the best investors do fall into the \u201cbuy and hold\u201d camp. Most look to buy into a company and hold on for anywhere from three to ten years or longer, only selling if the underlying thesis changes or if they become dissatisfied with management. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.q6r6y2wyrwp8\"><strong>Types of Investments <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Investing is often associated with the stock market.
